Printing on a dark wall: what does white ink do?
Your wall colour affects the appearance of a print. White ink can provide a base for colour on a dark surface, or form part of the design itself.

Why use a white underprint?
On a dark or coloured wall, the surface can influence the colours in the image. A white underprint creates a light base beneath selected parts of the design. Colour is then printed over it. wallPen describes this as the W+CMYK print mode.

White where the design needs it
The white layer does not have to be a large rectangle. White areas are prepared in the print file to match the subject. Examples include lettering, a logo or a cut-out image with the wall visible around it. A design printed in white ink alone is another possible application.

Assess the project first
White ink does not automatically make a surface suitable. Material, adhesion, texture and the intended appearance still matter. Send a photo of your wall or door and your design. We assess whether white is needed and whether a test is appropriate. A screen preview cannot guarantee an exactly identical printed colour.
